Steve Wynn, the leader of The Dream Syndicate, founding member of The Baseball Project, and celebrated solo artist, has announced the release of his autobiography “I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True” (Jawbone Press) and his first solo album in 12 years, “Make It Right” (Fire Records), both set to debut on August 30.
A Vivid Memoir: “I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True”
“I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True” is a vivid and revealing memoir from the founder of one of the most revered indie-rock bands of the 1980s, The Dream Syndicate. Wynn takes readers on a journey through his life, exploring his rise in the indie and major label music scenes, the luxuries and pitfalls of success, and the personal transformations he experienced along the way. It’s a tale of redemption, with music serving as the vehicle for his artistic and personal transcendence.
A New Album: “Make It Right”
“Make It Right” features contributions from an impressive roster of artists, including Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple), Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), and Linda Pitmon (The Baseball Project). The album kicks off with “Santa Monica,” the city where Wynn was born, and concludes with “Roosevelt Avenue,” a nod to his current home in Queens, New York.
“I wrote and recorded the songs on “Make It Right” in tandem with working on “I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True”, my memoir,” said Steve Wynn. “With each chapter, I would get ideas for songs inspired by the deep dive into my past and vice versa. The reflections became intertwined after a while, a mutual commentary between literal and metaphorical ruminating.”
Upcoming Tour: A Night of Songs and Stories
Wynn will embark on a solo tour across the UK, Europe, and North America this autumn. The tour will be a one-man show blending songs from and inspired by the book, along with readings and storytelling. Fans can expect a mix of classics and rarities from The Dream Syndicate’s catalogue, reflective numbers from the new album, and an evening of revisited memories.
