THE PLOT THUS FAR
The World’s Oldest-And Deadliest-Grudge Match Comes To An End! Superstars Jeph Loeb (TV’s Heroes) and Simone Bianchi (Astonishing X-Men) team up for the biggest*best and*quite possibly*last battle between Wolverine and Sabretooth! These sworn foes have been locked in an endless grudge match that goes back longer than either can remember-or even imagine. The key to victory is eons old*and it’s certain to rock their world. Think you’ve seen Marvel’s fiercest go toe-to-toe before? Those were just warm-ups!
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Wolverine vs. Sabretooth” was a weird choice for a motion comic. Simone Bianchi’s art is very painted, so when they animated the original frames, the audience started seeing some Uncanny Valley level shenanigans. If you’re not familiar with the story, here’s how it goes. Sabretooth and Wolverine are throwing down for the last time. Meanwhile, recent discoveries showcase that there has been a side mutant strain that has risen alongside Homo Superior. Every beastial mutant in the Marvel Universe has come together to figure out what’s going on.
Pacing is what ultimately killed this story in comic form, thus motion comics only exaggerate it to worse effect. You get Weapon X thrown in, then a ton of secondary characters and so many scene changes that it’s just inane. That’s not to mention the never-ending recaps and flashbacks for a story that lasted only six issues. The whole thing is just a build-up for Wolverine to finally kill Sabretooth. Along the way, we get plane crashes and hand slashes galore. There’s more maiming in this one story than I’ve seen in all the Sabretooth stories stitched together.
The DVD comes with a retrospective featurette featuring Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi. Hell, it wasn’t that long ago that the original storyline came out. How can you have a retrospective on something that’s less than a decade old? The A/V Quality is on par with past Marvel Knights releases. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
