“What We Do in the Shadows” is a mockumentary at its finest. While the vampire has been turned on its ear before, no one has really gone out of their way to make it so mundane. The film clocks in under 90 minutes and not a minute is wasted. The eye for detail and the need to build the world of the New Zealand vampire shows off something wonderful. They’re all do-nothings that just want to eat a random strange and not turn into their Court Orlok looking friend.
Jemaine Clement is still one of the great voices in modern comedy and he has an insane sense of atmosphere. While his Conchords partner have gone Muppet crazy, Clement has been using films like this and “Eagle vs. Shark” to showcase a unique style. Some have compare it to much to American style, but I guess the elements of outsider spotlight are universal.
The Blu-Ray comes with commentary, deleted scenes, interviews, promo videos and more as the special features. The A/V Quality is sharp for a foreign comedy. The 1080p transfer is dark, but show great clarity. The same can be said for the dynamic range of the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track. This one is worth a purchase to all.
