“We Are Still Here” is a loving semi remake of “House by the Cemetery”. Channeling Fulci and Euro-Gothic horror to create something new allows for a stunning vehicle for horror icon Barbara Crampton. Crampton is part of a couple that moves into a new home. Unfortunately, the home is a corrupted funeral home that demands a sacrifice every 30 years. Can Crampton and her husband survive the ghosts that threaten to tear them apart?
The film works more in the dread sense than any gore. Nothing is that scary, but the film thrives on atmosphere and the growing feeling that Crampton will be the cause of her bitter end. This kind of horror rarely gets the attention it deserves, as American tastes skew towards found footage and cheap spooks anymore. Larry Fessenden and Lisa Marie have strong supporting turns as a pair of amateur psychics. Still, it’s the best horror film about a dead kid I’ve seen this year.
The Blu-Ray comes with a commentary, featurette, teaser and trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is strong for an indie horror tale. The 1080p transfer sports amazing clarity. If that’s not enough, the DTS-HD 5.1 track is robust across all channels. If you’re a fan of unique horror, I’d recommend a purchase.
