Vertical has excitingly announced the acquisition of U.S. rights to AGC Studios’s “Poolman,” the much-anticipated absurdist comedy caper directed by and starring Chris Pine. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023, marks Pine’s directorial debut and features a star-studded cast including Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and DeWanda Wise.
A Star-Packed Cinematic Experience
“Poolman” showcases Pine’s multifaceted talent, not only as the director but also as the lead actor and co-writer alongside Ian Gotler. The film was produced by an impressive team including Stacey Sher and Patty Jenkins, renowned for their work in “Erin Brockovich” and the “Wonder Woman” franchise, respectively. AGC Studios, along with Brickell and Broadbridge International, financed the film.
The Story of “Poolman”
Set in Los Angeles, “Poolman” follows the life of Darren Barrenman (played by Pine), a dedicated pool caretaker of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block.
His mundane life takes a turn when he embarks on an investigation to expose a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer, spurred by a request from a mysterious femme fatale. The film explores themes of heroism and self-discovery, with Darren uncovering hidden truths about his city and himself.
Peter Jarowey of Vertical praised Pine’s work, highlighting the unique and vibrant cinematic experience “Poolman” offers. Pine shared his enthusiasm for collaborating with Vertical and his personal connection to the story, stating that “Poolman” was inspired by his own experiences of feeling awkward while growing up and reimagining these with joy and compassion.
Stacey Sher commented on the uncynical view of the world portrayed in “Poolman,” expressing excitement for its upcoming release. Patty Jenkins, who worked closely on the film, praised Pine’s natural talent as a director and the depth of the film’s messaging.
“Poolman” features an original score by Andrew Bird and cinematography by Matthew Jensen. The film’s executive production team includes Stuart Ford, Miguel A. Palos Jr., Linda McDonough, Jeanette Volturno, Rick A. Osako, Jeff Elliott, and Matthew Dwyer.
The deal was finalized by Vertical’s team including Peter Jarowey and Tony Piantedosi, alongside Anant Tamirisa of AGC Studios and CAA Media Finance. With a theatrical release scheduled for 2024, “Poolman” is a film to watch out for, promising a blend of comedy, absurdism, and heartfelt storytelling.
