The Boy Downstairs is a fun quiet domestic film. Fun in the sense that it’s relatable in a less obnoxious Girls sort of way. Quiet, because it’s a lot of looks and lingering expectation than direct action. Basically, you’re getting prepped to watch 90 minutes of a girl argument with 17 minutes of moping. While that might sound dismissive, I beg everyone to watch the film. Fight me on this, as I want to hear if I was missing something.
Zosia Mamet is still a talented actress and I eagerly await her work. However, it’s super hard to buy a romance involving someone who negatively shuts down anything resembling progress. There are nothing but good people in this movie, but your lead keeps coming across as an aggressive Joanna-come-lately. That’s the feminine version of that stock character, right? Oh well, give it a shot. You’ve got nothing better to do.
