THE SADIST OF NOTRE DAME REVIEWED
“The Sadist of Notre Dame” is a pretty cool idea. A defrocked Priest decided to murder sinners. For some reason, most of the sinners seem to be sex workers. While most would suggest that this hints at a degree of sexism, it helps to know the film’s history. The Sadist is the third iteration of a film that started in 1974. Franco took the picture from suspense thriller to XXX porn and now it’s an interesting horror film with choice nudity. Thankfully, Franco stopped here.
The fact that Franco considered this his most personal film confuses me. To say that the film is totally coherent is a lie. However, it does try to delve deep into the mind of a man who thinks that murder can be a righteous act. Yet, it’s also a Franco movie that deep dives into the exploitation nature of the story. It’s a such a conflicted film that keeps screaming at you to take it seriously. When you finish the film, make sure to check out the select scene commentary track. You’re going to need the extra info to parse the film out.
