QUEEN OF THE DESERT REVIEWED
“Queen of the Desert” feels like a female-led side story to “Lawrence of Arabia”. Gertrude Bell was a real figure that helped the British government map North Africa and the Middle East. Sure, she ran into T.E. Lawrence (Robert Pattinson), but their ideas were running on parallel rails. Herzog tries to do something amazing by reframing the adventure of Lawrence of Arabia into a story about female freedom. Unfortunately, Nicole Kidman plays the material small and Herzog goes micro to match her efforts. As a result, it feels like a ton of potential was missed. Still, it’s worth checking out.
