Mississippi Grind is the best movie about gambling in years. Rounders fans can jump under a bus.
“Mississippi Grind” is the ultimate road trip for degenerate gamblers. It’s also a far more mature take on “California Split”. While that might seem like I’m saying you’ve seen it before, you’d be right. But, you have never seen Reynolds pair off with a fellow actor so well in a drama. Hell, this is the best Reynolds performance since a talking cat was instructing him to kill.
This movie gets what makes gambling addiction work. Winning doesn’t matter, so much as the hunt. Watching Ben Mendelsohn’s character sink into nothingness and steal from his ex-wife is one of the most depressing moments of 2015. But, moments like that are all the film has going for it. You’ve seen this before and the only real appreciation to take away is catching the rising star of Ben Mendelsohn.
The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette as the sole special feature. The A/V Quality is strong for an indie drama. The 1080p transfer is supportive and showcases the bright interiors. However, the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track doesn’t get much of a workout. Well, there’s ambient noise and casino cross mix. It’s still an amazing film and well worth a purchase.
