“Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine” is a stunning look at how one young man’s death could impact so many. Directed by a close friend of Matt Shepard, director Michele Josue takes us through the actual event and how the Shepard family has been functioning in the years since it happened. We see the Shepards promote tolerance and support for homosexual students across the country, while working to keep bigots from ever murdering innocents again. It’s a broad scope and a noble dream, but the effort is there. The documentary is stark, but it deserves a viewing by all parties. The DVD comes with no special features.
