“Indian Summers” is all about atmosphere and thin on plot. As Indian independence is on the rise, British settlers are annoyed with the eventual collapse of their ruling class. The series follows the British talking among themselves and the few Indians that they keep company. As things go, the two sides clash and people have to choose sides. All the while, I’m waiting for Gandhi to show up with a big bag of weed. That’s what he did, right?
As British rule came to an end in India, apparently it was a placeholder for British drama to dwell forever. Paced like a vintage 80s Brit TV mini-series, the 10 part series takes forever to get going. If it was an American series, we’d be lucky to get three parts. But, America wouldn’t put Julie Walters in a lead role or care about race relations in India. We’d throw in a car chase and a Wiz Khalifa track.
The Blu-Ray comes with a hour long documentary about the production. The A/V Quality is sharp for a PBS Masterpiece show. The 1080i transfer is on par with the other PBS HD releases. Still, I wish the Dolby 2.0 track was more expansive. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
