COBRA VERDE
“Cobra Verde” is a mercenary scumbag who has been sent to Africa to watch over slaves on a sugar plantation. Unfortunately, he can’t keep it in his pants and he ends up impregnating the three daughters of the Plantation owner. Now sent to the West of Africa, Cobra Verde has been tasked with undermining British Law to obtain slaves from a crazed tribal king. This was one of the last great Kinski performances and he portrays a giant rat bastard. Herzog used real tribesman for the last chunk of the film and it pays off. Especially, since Kinski started foaming at the mouth and started yelling at every other actor.
The film comes with a commentary track, featurette and a trailer as the special features. “Cobra Verde” is an oddity, but one that is due to for a re-appreciation. Please, don’t start with the film. This is late era Kinski and you need to build up to the magic that is one of the greatest German actors. Afterwards, you need to immediately watch “My Best Fiend” and then visit the last two documentaries in the set.
