HERZOG: THE COLLECTION

WOYZECK

“Woyzeck” is about man vs. nature, but Woyzeck’s nature is to go insane. Alienation and loneliness defines Woyzeck as he is constantly abused by life. Military routine and the push to live by a psychological profile is breaking Woyzeck down. The military in the film uses Woyzeck for menial tasks such as shaving his commander or running basic routines for the medical staff. If anything, Kinski is playing Woyzeck as a rat in a government funded cage. All the while making odd faces and bugging his eyes out at every chance. Needless to say, this doesn’t end well.

The film comes with a featurette and trailer as the special features. The conversational piece with Lauren Straub helps connect a lot of the pieces of the film. Still, I feel it’s the Herzog film that I know the least about. Even with time and research on my side, I’ve never been able to break through to the truth. But, is there any truth other than what’s on the surface here?
