THE GUMBALL RALLY REVIEWED
“The Gumball Rally” is an amazing car chase comedy that doesn’t quite gel. Why doesn’t it gel? Well, that’s because it’s trying to find the right pace to work. The Reynolds/Needham car comedies were still a smidge off, so I admire stunt coordinator Chuck Bail’s attempt at making this kind of movie. In a way, he made a perfect prototype for “The Cannonball Run” and other fun oddities. It’s just that this doesn’t feel as camp. In a way, it’s pretty cynical.
Gary Busey and Raul Julia both steal the movie away from lead Michael Sarrazin. Sarrazin is trying to do what Reynolds did in later movies, but fails. Busey and Julia get that they are in a live-action Wacky Races and they’re fighting over who gets to play the giggling dog. For those that have seen the film, don’t you just love Busey’s Camaro? So many cars in this film are dated, but that car remains a cherry piece of work.
Not everyone that reads this site is a car junkie. I know this because they whine about why I don’t talk about tabletop games and pocket protectors. So, pick this up and try to be cool. It’s funny. Doesn’t that help?
