THE GODFATHER AT 45
“The Godfather” celebrates its 45th anniversary this week with a new Blu-ray release. If you missed out on the Complete Saga release, then it’s nice to pick up the movies individually. I guess that means it gives casual fans the chance to cut Part III out of the mix. That’s lame, as the film is due for a re-appreciation. Sofia Coppola isn’t an actress, but Mantegna and Garcia kill in the film. That helicopter assault is pretty damn stunning.
But, this is supposed to be about The Godfather. What can you say about one of the most classic American films? That it’s probably one of the greatest literary adaptations? Have you read the book? So much of Puzo wanking all over period NYC gets cut to actually tell a story. I know that Coppola has fallen out of favor among film fans, but the man was an amazing writer. Honestly, I wonder what would’ve happened if Lucas teamed up with him to write the Star Wars films.
What about Coppola on the Prequels? Yeah, I get that he was trying to save various MGM films at the time. But, Coppola could’ve trimmed the fat around that bloated beast. What I’m trying to say is that this is the kind of opportunity you save for the young. While “The Godfather” has been around for 45 years, it’s always going to be someone’s first time watching the movie. Share it this week.
