FREE STATE OF JONES REVIEWED

“Free State of Jones” really made you work for it. While I love historical fiction and films that take detailed looks at the Civil War, it felt like Ross was trying to tell two movies in one. Both stories served a purpose, it’s just that they would’ve been better served as different films. Matthew McConaughey continues his quest to prove to the world that he can act. Listen, pal…we are all onboard with that one. But, this film about a Whole Foods take on Josey Wales creates something straddles revisionism with a realistic look at the rejection of Confederate authority in the South. Solid work all around with a tremendous cast. But, a serious edit could’ve fixed a ton of the film’s issues.
