“Fireworks” – A Poignant LGBTQ Drama Set in 1982 Sicily, Coming to North America

Cinephobia Releasing is excited to announce the North American release of the Italian LGBTQ drama “Fireworks,” directed and co-written by Giuseppe Fiorello. The film, which is an emotional journey set against the backdrop of 1982 Sicily, is set to arrive on January 18, 2024, on DVD and VOD across various digital platforms, including AppleTV, Amazon Prime, Google Play, VUDU, and more.

“Fireworks” chronicles the troubled relationship between Gianni and Nino, set in a conservative and prejudiced Sicilian town. The narrative is a powerful exploration of their love story, intertwined with the lives of their families, neighbors, and friends, offering a comprehensive view of the societal challenges they face.

This poignant film draws inspiration from a real-life incident that ignited the Italian Gay Rights movement in 1981. “I was attracted to Fireworks because it is more than just another ‘gay film.’ It truly is a snapshot of a 1981 pre-gay rights Italian village,” commented Ray Murray, President of Cinephobia Releasing.

Set in the summer of 1982, “Fireworks” paints a vibrant picture of a sunbaked Sicilian town. Gianni, a shy teen working as a car mechanic, faces relentless taunting for his sexual orientation. His life takes a turn when he meets Nino, a curly-haired boy with a captivating smile. As their relationship blossoms, they face increasing opposition from their community, leading to a courageous stand against prejudice.

The film has been celebrated at numerous festivals, including its North American Premiere at the Lincoln Center’s Open Roads Film Festival. It has also been featured at Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival, Cinema Diverse: Palm Springs LGBTQ+ Film Festival, Damn These Heels Queer Film Festival, and Reel Q – Pittsburgh’s LGBT Film Festival.

“Fireworks” features performances from Gabriele Pizzurro, Samuele Segreto, Fabrizia Sacchi, Simona Malato, Antonio De Matteo, and Enrico Roccaforte. Produced by Riccardo Di Pasquale, Gabriele Oricchio, and Eleonora Pratelli, and shot by cinematographer Ramiro Civita, the film promises a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.

Mark your calendars for the release of “Fireworks” on January 18, 2024, and join in experiencing this moving portrayal of love, identity, and resilience in the face of societal challenges.

This film is not just a cinematic experience but a reflection of a significant period in LGBTQ history.
