THE EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC REVIEWED
“The Exorcist II: The Heretic” gets an insane amount of hate now. I chalk that up to Internet Movie YouTube assessors deeming it awful. I won’t even give those people the dignity of being called reviewers/critics/Friends of P. Also, I don’t support the cult of John Boorman. His film library boasts classics, forgettables and utter trash. Depending on where you are in life, your appreciation of the film will push Exorcist II into all of the categories at time.
John Boorman probably shouldn’t have directed this film. Yeah, he was approached for the first movie, but he found it repulsive. The director’s push for a metaphysical thriller flew in the face of what worked in the movie. While Friedkin and Blatty investigated the roots of belief and how the supernatural infiltrates our world, Boorman wanted ideas. That’s the main issue with Exorcist II. So many ideas fight to stay onscreen, while the audience wants to learn more about Regan and Merrin’s past.
It’s such a shame that it was Paul Henreid’s last movie.
