DUDES REVIEWED
“Dudes” was one of those movies that seemed like it was always playing on basic cable. Imagine my surprise when I learned that it never got a DVD release. For those not familiar with the film, a group of late 80s NYC punks decide to take a trip to LA. While in the West, their buddy gets murdered by a rural drunk. Now, the two remaining dudes get a spiritual cultural appropriation awakening. The fatter white guy is now an Indian and Jon Cryer becomes badass for the only time in his life.
Catherine Mary Stewart shows up to play the female relief. But, this is a quick blast of a revenge tale about punks ranking above themselves. It’s not the best Spheeris film, but it holds up among her body of work. If I had to pinpoint what goes wrong with the film, it’s that it’s so hard to buy Jon Cryer turning into a badass. No matter what he does or how much he stretches, all I see is Ducky or Lenny Luthor.
Sometimes, you’re always going to be stuck as a type.
