THE PLOT THUS FAR
The new fitness club in town has everything a health nut could ever want: a variety of workout machines, classes taught by friendly (and frisky) instructors, and a state-of-the-art computer control system for maximum client comfort. Unfortunately it’s also possessed by the evil spirit of the owner’s dead wife, and before long every dumbbell, leg press, and rowing machine becomes a deadly weapon for her to enact bloody vengeance on the club’s beautiful members. So if you re looking for a real workout from hell, enter DEATH SPA a new exercise in terror!
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Death Spa” is the kind of movie that used to make me stay up late at night. When I was a young tyke, I watched any piece of shit that premium cable had to offer. The film has boobs, carnage and cool box art. What more do you want? A plot about an evil woman coming back to life to turn exercise equipment into a means of murder? Pretty young people getting ripped apart and blood spattered everywhere? Excuse me, people. I just had a private moment.
Trash cinema rules because it came at a time after the Grindhouse died, Video Exploitation was in its infancy and there was no room for the other. This is the other and it is delightful trash that plays with the basic appeal of tits and violence. I love that this is the release that Gorgon Video chose to begin their rightful return to a new era of home video. We missed you, Gorgon! Long may the titans of VHS and Digital schlock reign!
The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette, DVD copy, commentary and trailers as the special features. The DTS-HD 2.0 master audio is really clean for a film of its age. Plus, the 1080p transfer shows signs of restoration while looking period appropriate. That’s all I expected and I’m glad that we got it. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the curious.
