“Chocolate City” plays as a Blaxploitation take on “Magic Mike”. Well, a new Blaxploitation take. Does it count as Blaxploitation? It’s not like this film couldn’t have received a major studio release. After all, Paramount is distributing it on Home Video. But, what makes this so different?
Well, the forced cultural dependence on religion. That constant sense of familial belief shame that permeates throughout the lead’s journey is enough to put me off the film. After all, what was supposed to happen? Was Michael supposed to flunk out of college, hurt his mother and make zero cash? The supporting cast is strong, but the script needed a few more passes. In the end, I’d recommend a rental to the curious.
