CHEECH AND CHONG’S NEXT MOVIE REVIEWED
“Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie” is such a bizarre sequel. It’s 95 minutes of nothing happening. While that seems standard for a stoner film, it just feels so lame post “Up in Smoke”. That being said, this film also doubled as an amazing showcase for The Groundlings. Paul Reubens, Phil Hartman, Edie McClurg, Elvira, Jambi and others showed up to serve as straight men to the titular stoner duo. If that wasn’t enough, Cheech plays two roles. Both roles involve him not doing much.
Michael Winslow shows up to make weird noises pre Police Academy, but nothing happens. They have a UFO scene ala Life of Brian and some hi-jinks on a movie set. If I didn’t love Cheech & Chong, I’d be seriously annoyed. But, most of the issues here are due to translation. What sounds like it could’ve played well on a comedy album comes across tired when stretched to 95 minutes. A ton of the film feels like Cheech and Chong trying to figure out what to do next.
While not an impressive movie, it’s a comedic building block. It’s just sad that said building block will eventually lead us to “The Corsican Brothers”. Take them as it comes, people.
