Captive makes light of all parties involved. But, the acting is out of the world.
“Captive” is a really amazing kidnapping movie. David Oyelowo and Kate Mara carry the bulk of the movie on their performances. However, its constant push to turn into a commercial for The Purpose Driven Life is disheartening. Yes, the book played a part in the real case. I get that and no one can argue that fact.
However, what does one do when relating the story? Either you don’t portray the importance of the tale in Kate Mara’s survival or you put way too much focus on it. It’s a no-win scenario depending on the viewing audience, but I felt that it could’ve been played down way more. But, that’s just who I am.
The DVD comes with a Digital HD copy and featurettes as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty stellar. The transfer holds up for standard definition. If that wasn’t enough, the Dolby 5.1 track is pretty strong. In the end, I’d recommend a rental.
