GREATEST EARS IN TOWN, THE

THE PLOT THUS FAR

‘Amazing is an understatement. He was brilliant.` So says the Queen of Soul in this Grammy nominated documentary chronicling the life and career of `One of the greatest producers of the 20th Century` who produced more than 50 gold and platinum records with sales topping 50 million units. Supported with a treasure trove of archival footage, photos, music and in-depth interviews with Sir George Martin, Bette Midler, The Bee Gees, Hall & Oates, Phil Collins, Norah Jones, Barbra Streisand, and more.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“The Greatest Ears in Town” celebrates the life of Arif Mardin. It’s a standard celebratory piece about how awesome it is to work in the industry for decades. Honestly, I have to say that it’s well made with just the right amount of interviews. Normally, it’s easy to poo-poo these affairs due to the ability to turn into puff pieces. However, this film serves as an extended time capsule for the industry.

What’s so impressive is that the guy worked with everyone from the Bee Gees to Norah Jones to indirect work on the South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut soundtrack. If you had to balance the material, I could see acts getting cut. But, the presentation of the acts in this documentary showcase its history. Somehow, I feel like I’m not selling how informative the material will be.

The DVD comes with no substantial special features other than the extra interview footage. However, the A/V Quality holds up across the board. The transfer is pretty flat and the full PCM 48K track supports the dialogue. That being said, it wasn’t meant to blow out your home theater. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans of rock history.

CROODS, THE

THE PLOT THUS FAR

After their cave is destroyed, a caveman family must trek through an unfamiliar fantastical world with the help of an inventive boy.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“The Croods” offers a set of ridiculous sequences to easily get to know about these characters. When it finally proceeds to the actual plot, it tells something sophisticated. It’s an opposition between safety and getting away from your comfort zone. It ends up being obvious when it is suppose to be complex. But that is what the film wants, be simple and delightful all the way. The film doesn’t necessarily need to be deep or emotional, but there is something clever to its concept that could have been

What makes “The Croods” work so well are the characters, which were likable and interesting: Instead of being just bland archetypes, each one of them had their own virtues and flaws: That makes their interaction in the story to be funny and slightly more complex than in other Dreamworks movies, which rely too much in scatological humor and tired cultural references. Fortunately, “The Croods” avoids those kind of content, including instead of that some little black comedy elements which adults viewers would appreciate.

The Blu-Ray comes with a DVD and Digital HD Copy. You get featurette, cut scenes, a coloring app and a ton of related stuff. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp with a keen 1080p transfer. Plus, the DTS-HD 7.1 master audio track really pops across the field. The fourth quarter of 2013 is really killing it in terms of audio quality. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.

AFTER EARTH

THE PLOT THUS FAR

A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“After Earth” offers some initial exposition about why humanity has fled the Earth. Blah, blah and the movie begins. One of the main war heroes in the battle against the Ursa is General Cypher Kaige. Cypher is a tough, battle-hardened military man who seems to have a hard time differentiating his work life from his home life. His son is Kitai, a young boy who desperately wants his father’s approval, and is trying for a position in the military, but fears he will never live up to dad’s lofty expectations for him. Kitai is also haunted by the memory of seeing his older sister, Senshi, being killed by an Ursa right before his eyes. Cypher’s wife suggests a father-son space voyage, so that they can bond. This doesn’t go very well, as the ship is severely damaged in an asteroid belt, killing everyone on board except Cypher and Kitai, and sending the ship crashing on the abandoned planet Earth.

However, a better script would have helped matters. Kitai must now go into rescue mode, wearing his amazing technicolor space suit, fighting beasts and creatures along the way to becoming a man. On his journey of self-awareness, Kitai contends with imminent peril: giant baboons, poisonous leeches, carnivorous tigers, and such. He needs to deal with the fluctuating below-freezing temperatures and an active volcano too. Life is hard. Kitai even battles a monster called the Ursa, a predator that hunts by sensing fear.

The DVD comes with an Ultraviolet Digital Copy, featurettes and related info. The A/V Quality is sharp enough for standard definition. The Dolby 5.1 track works for what it is, plus the mutant whales sound good. It works for what it is. I’d recommend a rental for the curious.

ALPHA & OMEGA 2: A HOWL-IDAY ADVENTURE

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Kate & Humphrey and their 3 wolf cubs (Stinky, Claudette and Runt) are happily preparing to celebrate their first winter together when their smallest cub, Runt, mysteriously disappears. They must now go on a new journey across the wilderness to find and bring back Runt before the winter snows block their way home. It’s their greatest adventure yet, filled with action and suspense as well as plenty of the humor and heartwarming moments that were delivered in the first theatrical release. While their adventure does not end exactly as planned, Kate & Humphrey discover that “Home is where the Family Is.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Alpha and Omega 2” was a sequel that no one really wanted. But, kids will watch cartoon animals and there is money to be made. The animation was handled by an Indian CG company and it works pretty well. I just can’t see many kids caring about a missing wolf cub when they have a hard enough time remembering the two characters from the last movie. Maybe, I’m wrong?

There’s something about DTV animated sequels. The wolves learn that home is where your family is. But, it takes nearly ninety minutes for it to happen. Why does every random idea need a sequel? Animation takes awhile and why doesn’t this cross anyone’s mind while they’re staying at the same cel over and over again. I guess that I ask too much.

The Blu-Ray comes with a quiz and featurettes. You also get a DVD and Digital HD Copy. The 1080p transfer is really strong for a DTV flick. That being said, I wish the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track became more dynamic. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to parents of young kids.

Runt is the youngest cub of Kate and Humphrey’s litter. He is funny, rambunctious and caring, but always feels the need to prove that he is just as good as his alpha brother and sister.

Claudette and Stinky are the two alpha cubs from Kate and Humphrey’s litter. Both are very smart and love their brother Runt. They strive to do the right thing, and although their intentions are good their inexperience gets them into trouble.

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Riva is a small time operator who has just returned to his hometown of Kinshasa, Congo after a decade away with a major score: a fortune in hijacked gasoline. Wads of cash in hand and out for a good time, Riva is soon entranced by beautiful night club denizen Nora, the kept woman of a local gangster. Into the mix comes an Angolan crime lord relentlessly seeking the return of his stolen shipment of gasoline. Director Djo Tunda Wa Munga s Kinshasa is a seductively vibrant, lawless, fuel-starved sprawl of shantytowns, gated villas, bordellos and nightclubs and Riva is its perfect embodiment.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

A small time hustler and thief returns to hometown and promptly falls for gangster’s girl. Gangster notices and gets upset. Meanwhile the thief is being tracked down and targeted for revenge by the guys he stole from…and those guys are not playing around, they’re way more dangerous then the flashy gangster. Film works really well to a point. That point would be the last twenty or so minutes where the plot threads that have been forming the whole time finally come together but they don’t exactly merge the way you’d like them to.

When resources are scarce, the black market adds value to the catastrophe and violence ensues. There has been created something that borders on Shakespearean and noirish here. It’s a gutpunch addition to the gangster genre. It’s even more impressive for standing up against big-budget action fare while remaining driven by entangled ambition. These characters are ultimately all looking out for their own skin, but though their actions seem heartless, they also feel necessary. That being said, it works as a great Third World gangster flick. I know that most of you have seen “Tsotsi”, but this will work as a great counterpoint. Give it a shot when it streets this Fall. I’m not sure if an HD presentation offers that much to it, but it looks good for what it is.

The DVD comes with an interview with the director, a short film and a theatrical trailer. The original language track is saved in Dolby 5.1 and it sounds great. Plus, you get a supportive transfer. I really wish that more people will take the time to watch it on Home Video. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.

COME DANCE WITH ME

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Jack (Andrew McCarthy) is an executive in a financial brokerage firm trying to impress the firm’s president, Drew Clayton (Chris Gillett), in hopes of a promotion. However, Jack is dating the fabulously rich and elegant Demi Clayton (Stephanie Mills), who happens to be Drew’s daughter. Although Demi’s mother Clarisse (Jane Moffat) doesn’t necessarily approve of Jack and would prefer her daughter to date a man within their social circle, Jack still plans on proposing. Trying to create the perfect proposal, Jack signs up for dance lessons in preparation for his proposal to Demi at her father’s lavish annual Christmas Dance. But when sparks start to fly between Jack and his dance instructor, Christine (Michelle Nolden), Jack will have to make some important decisions before it is too late.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Andrew McCarthy should stick to directing television. He’s pretty good at it and it serves to get his face off camera. The real world isn’t Pretty in Pink, Blaine. James Spader won and Jon Cryer is kept as a rent boy for Ashton Kutcher on CBS.  McCarthy plays a guy that’s trying to woo the boss’s daughter and move up in the world. Unfortunately, he falls in love while learning how to dance. “Dirty Dancing” is only slightly edgier because Swayze helped a chick to get an abortion.

If you like this kind of schmaltz, then you’re probably reading this site on your kid’s iPad. It’s cool, people. I know that a lot of readership is female and of a certain age. That’s why I promise that our erotic section (scheduled unveiling: December 2013) will keep you entertained. I’m just going to keep reviewing these tired old Hallmark movies as an effort to kill their casual fantasies and push you towards the one I create. Can you say nostalgia porn?

The DVD comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is strong with a supportive transfer and a Dolby audio track. The Dolby track doesn’t get much back channel action outside of the few major scenes. In the end, I’d recommend a rental to old women.
