AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, THE

amazingspiderman2poster

Director: Mark Webb
Writers: Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt
Cast: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan, Jamie Foxx, Sally Field and Paul Giamatti
Studio: Columbia/SONY

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ was better than the first movie. That’s where the good times end. The same giant issues with tone and the desperate need to always present a threat runs like a shit brown streak in Spidey’s red and blue bodysuit. While Marvel has managed to do the impossible by creating a real comic book movie universe, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” falls into the same traps as “Man of Steel”. You have a giant and easily recognizable cultural and comic book icon, but there are so many creative cooks trying to for a unique stamp on him. Ultimately, he just becomes an action figure where every kid has jotted their initials on his feet.

Marvel needs to find a way to cut a deal with SONY to bring the web head back into the fold. Standing alone, we find a Spider-Man that plays like the DC cinematic heroes of the late 70s through the 90s. A hodgepodge of dialed down personalities and characters that appeal to the direct middle of the audience and offer nothing in serious value. Actors take a paycheck, put on a few appliances and then grimace and act impressive for the cameras. Character is gone by the end of the picture, as the studio is racing for a film that can earn a three day weekend and then die on the vine. This isn’t a film, it’s a checklist to making back a budget.

What does work and works amazingly well is the relationship between Stone’s Gwen Stacy and Garfield’s Peter Parker. It helps that they’re in love in real life, but you feel that chemistry and connection onscreen. When the time comes for Gwen Stacy to embrace her comic book roots, it feels real and it stings as much as when Gerry Conway wrote it. However, it’s coming at the hands of a Green Goblin who begins losing his personality from the moment he shows up onscreen. Chris Cooper was smart for having his name removed from the film. Thankfully for SONY, he wasn’t Mason Verger level vocal about it like Gary Oldman.

While our screening didn’t get the Shazam infused end credits or the UK’s special scene from “Days of Futures Past”; the film did leave me with hope. I see a Rhino that finds support from a character actor who wants to be part of the long haul. I see the effort to build a strong supporting cast that will start to give Peter Parker much needed dimension. Mark Webb is finally starting to play with shots and gets a sense of the fluid nature of web slinging. But, then you hear and see those promo shots for The Sinister Six. Those six quick clips online will stick in your head, as you think about how misbalanced and bland most of the revamp villains have been in the first film and this sequel.

That feeling of unease will continue for most fans, as the film continues its media stride. Casual fans will dig the Electro fight sequences. Hell, they’ll like seeing the Rhino at the end of the movie. But, this is nothing but spectacle bookended by a few scenes of Peter and Gwen caring about each other. It could’ve been a lot better, but the film works on that basic level.

ANGER MANAGEMENT: VOLUME THREE

angermanagementseason3

THE PLOT THUS FAR

The hilarious hit comedy “Anger Management” is back! Starring award-winning actor Charlie Sheen, “Anger Management” Volume 3 follows Charlie Goodman, a non-traditional therapist specializing in anger management. He has a successful private practice, holding sessions with his group of primary-patient regulars each week, as well as performing pro bono counseling for an inmate group at a state prison. His life is complicated by his relationships with his own therapist and best friend (Selma Blair), his ex-wife (Shawnee Smith) ?whose positive outlook but poor life-choices frustrate Charlie, their 15- year-old daughter who has OCD (Daniela Bobadilla) and, of course, his interfering and meddlesome father, Martin (Martin Sheen).

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Anger Management” is a show based on a terrible Adam Sandler movie. The terrible Adam Sandler movie with Jack Nicholson. I only remember it because I got food poisoning from the dirtiest Arby’s in Lexington and I missed half of the movie. Thank you, Big Beef and Rancid Cheddar for sparing me such indignities. I miss that theater so much. I saw “American Psycho” and “The Real Cancun” there.

Charlie Sheen is a self parody and he wants to make money off of that. I can’t say that I blame him. The days of “Hot Shots” and “The Rookie” have long since passed. As such, it’s time to embrace the decline of one’s personality and career with a grace that usually doesn’t get afforded to people who have cheated the sweet embrace of death while contemporaries ate it outside of the Viper Room. Now, he’s in his forties and relying on the good graces of people who have nothing better to do than star on his show. Talented show runner Bruce Helford tries to keep the show on track, but it’s garbage.

The Blu-Ray comes with a gag reel and Digital HD copy as the special features. The 1080p transfer is on par with the FX HD broadcast. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is lossless. So, there’s that. In the end, I’d recommend a rental to the curious.

MR. JONES

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Scott (Jon Foster of Stay Alive) and Penny (Sarah Jones of Sons Of Anarchy) just moved to a remote cabin to escape the pressures of the world and breathe new life into their art. They will soon discover they are not alone: an infamously reclusive artist known only as Mr. Jones lives nearby. He doesn’t like to be disturbed, and only comes out at night when he drags his strange, sinister sculptures deep into the woods. But when Scott and Penny’s curiosity leads them to venture too close for Mr. Jones comfort, he plunges the young couple into a nightmare world of mayhem, madness and mind-bending terror. Diane Neal (Law & Order: SVU) and David Clennon (John Carpenter’s The Thing) co-star in this startling tale from debut director Karl Mueller (writer of The Divide) and from the producer of the Sundance hit The Pact.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Mr. Jones” is so uneven that it becomes hard to watch. I get that people like to have drama mixed with their horror. That being said, I have to feel like the people onscreen might actually be in danger. Just throwing people in the Woods and giving them a scary story isn’t enough for me. Why should it be enough for you?

I’m getting so weird about Horror anymore. I know that it’s an easy genre to abuse and so many studios dump stories because they’re cheap and easily shot. But, you can say the same thing about porn. The only difference is that porn is occasionally funny. This film just happens into implausible situations and it doesn’t go anywhere.

The Blu-Ray comes with no special features. However, it gets one of the best Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio tracks that I’ve heard all year. How does that happen? The 1080p transfer is smooth enough for a Blair Witch clone. In the end, I’d recommend skipping it to most. The Redbox crowd will make it a rental.

LABOR DAY

Blu-ray-Osleeve_Template [Converted]

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Depressed single mom Adele and her son Henry offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Labor Day” isn’t a bad movie. It confuses sentimentality with a serious look at what makes a family. I get the role that Tobey Maguire was meant to play, but I found his narration and present day self to be a distraction. Reitman made the correct creative choice to have so much of the film persist with minimal dialogue and score. However, there are times where Winslet and Brolin can’t carry the action without turning the film into something else.

Jason Reitman is a real talent. However, he’s now two for two with his recent movies that didn’t find an audience. Is that his fault or should we blame audiences that can’t break out of romantic comedy staples and follow a serious director down different narrative paths? Stretching one’s desires for entertainment is a bold thing, but it’s not always easy. Joyce Maynard’s source novel tackled several issues related to masculinity and finding a role in the domestic life. However, what is one supposed to do in the modern age? It’s not an easy question and I don’t think that Reitman answered it. However, he let us experience the question in a carefully crafted narrative.

The Blu-Ray comes with a DVD, Digital HD copy, commentary, featurette and deleted scenes as the special features. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track isn’t massive, but it kicks in where needed. The 1080p transfer provides for a washed out color that seemingly benefits a tale of the past. I just wish we had something a little more defined. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the curious.

POWER RANGERS MEGAFORCE: THE GREAT DRAGON SPIRIT

GREATDRAGONSPIRITDVD

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Troy, Noah, Emma, Gia and Jake must convince the mysterious Robo Knight to work as a team to battle PsychoTick’s energy- draining powers, ShadowSerpent’s paralyzing touch, Distractor’s giant army of MegaMonsters, and NoJoke’s laughter-stealing traps. And when an ancient weapon falls into the wrong hands, the Rangers will summon the Mighty Dragon Spirit to earn new ULTRA POWERS! Witness the rise of a new Megaforce team in these four ultra-exciting episodes!

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“The Great Dragon Spirit” is the latest Power Rangers Megaforce compilation. Four episodes and it’s the same crap that has aired over the last twenty years. This time aliens have invaded and it’s up to a bunch of kids to repel the attack. They meet up with a robotic Power Ranger, but he doesn’t want to deal with their crap. As they work together to fight off monsters, they start to piece together what they need to do to earn the Robo Knight’s trust.

The Robo Knight is a new addition and it brings a fascinating dynamic to the team. He’s more powerful than the others, but he frequently has to rely on help to accomplish his goals. The Knight has a personality, yet he understands his weaknesses and the need to find a way to bridge the gaps he places on relationships with others. He’s also a frequent Deus ex Machina used to help correct crappy storytelling. But, there I go again crapping all over kiddie shows. When will I ever learn? Did someone say never? Onto the next one!

The DVD comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is par for the course with past releases. That being said, don’t expect to overwhelm your Home Theater experience. Your kids won’t care. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to parents of small children.

BRICK MANSIONS

BRICKMANSIONSposter

Director: Camille Delamarre
Writers: Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri
Cast: Paul Walker, David Belle and The RZA
Studio: Relativity Media

“Brick Mansions” is a film about parkour. It’s a film about Detroit. It’s a film that feels like something Cannon would’ve thrown together. Basically, it’s the near future and a lone cop has to team up with a poor Frenchman to fight an arms dealer. A neutron bomb has disappeared into a Carpenterian ghetto and the Detroit PD have to stop it from going off. Everyone involved has their reasons for stopping the blast. But, this is Paul Walker’s journey.

Paul Walker is getting this sort of B-movie action star sainthood in the months following his death. If he would’ve survived ghost riding the whip to Hell, I don’t think he would’ve started making better movies. He would’ve hopped franchises and kept trying to find the next vehicle that keeps him fresh in the minds of dirtbag kids hanging out in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The guy wasn’t a great actor, but he had enough of a personality to keep an action film moving forward. Plus, they didn’t have to dub him with Vin Diesel or anything.

While I’m glad that somebody will probably discover “District B13” because of this movie, I just wish this film was a little tighter. The end result is a remake that tries to hide its remake status because foreign movies scare the American mainstream. The parkour action is there, but there’s no reason to believe that this couldn’t have been anything else other than another generic Walker vehicle. The generic blandness of modern American action is hitting a fever pitch. Whether it’s the push to recruit foreigners or keep digging up our ancient action heroes, America refuses to support any new blood. When people like Scott Adkins and….wait. Scott Adkins is British. There aren’t any real action stars left in America under the age of 40. Let’s watch “Brick Mansions” again and celebrate the decline of action cinema.
