“Against the Sun” is another harrowing tale about survival during World War II that arrived late in 2014/January 2015. What about that period turned into such a trap for these stories? Also, what was up with the CG sharks? It’s a small nitpick, but sometimes computer generated imagery errs on the rough side. I’ll hold back for a bit to talk about the acting.
Tom Felton does amazing work as a young US Navy Airman. Jake Abel and Garret Dillahunt share the focus for most of the movie, but it’s Felton who demands attention and drives the audience during the high drama. Still, the film had high comparisons to break away from and it never happened. Throughout the presentation, I kept hearing Quint’s story from Jaws in my head and realizing that a dialogue heavy moment works for me decades after the fact. Why couldn’t the same dramatics connect here?
The DVD comes with featurettes as the special features. The A/V Quality is strong enough for standard definition. What kills me is that the transfer seems washed out and hazy all the time. The Dolby 5.1 track is supportive, but I couldn’t get what was going on with the look of the film. Ultimately, it’s worth a rental or a stream.
