RED TREES

RED TREES REVIEWED

“Red Trees” is about fuzzy cultural backgrounds and the need to make sense of family history. While I’m not familiar with director Marina Willer, she creates a visually driven documentary that attempts to explain her family’s origins. She draws identity from many lands and cultures, but never feels like she belongs to one specific place. In a way, it feels like a documentary for the age. But, there’s still that over-arching pain of trying to frame the refugee crisis into a sympathetic plight. The compassionate will feel the draw, but it still doesn’t have that cross-boundary angle that I expected. Oh well, it’s well worth checking out.
