TIME TO DIE REVIEWED
“Time to Die” is about a fat guy trying to return to his old life. He’s been in prison for 18 years after shooting down the man that tried to kill him. His old girlfriend wants nothing to do with him, but the kids of the man he murdered want him. The film tackles a lot of the issues that Altman handled in McCabe and Mrs. Miller. But, the film tries to show a tale of revenge in a very intimate story. After all, how many people could want to murder this guy?
For the rest of the movie, there’s a mild homosexual subtext streak going throughout the vengeful boys that want to kill our hero. Plus, the movie tends to dwell on the lush expanses of Mexican rural real estate. For a film show in open frame, the results are mixed. But, I appreciate foreign westerns that try to tweak the American format. Hell, did you know that Legendary Author Gabriel Garcia Marquez helmed the script with Carlos Fuentes? If anyone was literate anymore, this would be far more impressive than the blank stares I know I’m getting.
