In an exciting development for horror aficionados, Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service dedicated to horror, thriller, and the supernatural, has announced its acquisition of the rights to FRÉWAKA. This chilling Irish language folk horror film, written and directed by Aislinn Clarke, is set to make waves after its recent world premiere at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival.
Upcoming Premieres and Release Plans
FRÉWAKA will have its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11, 2024, and is slated to debut on Shudder in 2025. The acquisition includes rights for North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, marking a significant addition to Shudder’s lineup.
A Haunting Tale of Connection and Paranoia
The film follows Shoo, a home care worker who is sent to a remote village to care for an agoraphobic woman. This woman harbors a deep-seated fear of her neighbors as well as the Na Sídhe—sinister entities she believes abducted her decades ago. As Shoo and the old woman develop an oddly profound connection, Shoo becomes increasingly consumed by the woman’s paranoia, rituals, and superstitions, ultimately forcing her to confront the horrors from her own past.
Behind the Scenes
FRÉWAKA is produced by Diarmuid Lavery for DoubleBand Films and Patrick O’Neill for Wildcard, with executive production from Máire Ní Chonláin, Deirbhile Ní Churraighín, Greg Martin, and Michael Hewitt. The film received funding through the Cine4 scheme, supported by Screen Ireland, TG4, Coimisiún na Meán, and Section 481. Following its theatrical run in Ireland in 2025, audiences can look forward to its chilling arrival on Shudder.
A Promising Collaboration
The acquisition deal was negotiated by Jan Naszewski at New Europe Film and Marissa Frobes at CAA on behalf of the filmmakers, alongside Emily Gotto on behalf of Shudder. With its compelling storyline and cultural roots, FRÉWAKA is poised to be a significant addition to the horror genre, captivating audiences with its exploration of fear and connection.
