THEIR FINEST REVIEWED
“Their Finest” is one of those Anglophile porn movies for people who have way too many “Carry On” signs. But, it’s from the guy that directed An Education and Gemma Arterton is such a charming lead. So, why doesn’t the film connect with me? Hell, I obsessively love everything about World War II. Well, I didn’t love the part with the camps and Dresden. But, let’s look past that!
Bill Nighy leads the cast of actors that Arterton has assembled to make a wartime Propaganda films. If you’ve ever seen these movies, they were good and mainly lost on American audiences. But, they were still heartfelt and to the point. The actual production of these features is treated with brutal honesty in this film. Egos, emotion and acting fever runs high, as everyone feels they have the right stamp to put on their movie. But, Arterton carries on.
I haven’t read the source novel that inspired the film, but I imagine it followed a similar structure. There’s a problem, get the team together and save the nation’s morale. While that’s all fun and good, there’s still the matter of the War in Europe. Oh well, until the sequel.
