THE STEAM ENGINES OF OZ REVIEWED
“The Steam Engines of Oz” is a dystopian look at an Oz where the Tin Man has lost his heart. If you’re thinking that might be kid friendly, that’s a no. The Tin Man has turned OZ into a police state, so our steampunk freedom fighters have to restore order. While the show is adapted from a graphic novel that I never knew existed, I’m a little floored by how on the nose so much of the material plays out.
Our lead is named Victoria, they fight industrialization and they all wear Steampunk aesthetic. I don’t know what cross-section of Hot Topic shoppers they’re trying to ensnare, but it’s a bit much. What I don’t understand is the chronology. If The Wizard of Oz took place in Populist era Kansas in 1900, then how come 100 years has passed and we’re now in the Steampunk Victoria era? Does Oz move backwards in time? I’m confused, but it’s still worth a viewing.
