“Soul Boys of the Western World” wants to be a far smarter movie than its end result. While playing as a serious look at the pressures of the New Wave scene, we’re now treated to a real take on Spandau Ballet. What we end up getting plays as a feature documentary take on any number of “Where Are They Now” specials. Especially since the documentary hinges on the band getting back together to perform again. It’s fan service and it’s weak.
There’s a real history that gets touched upon with hit and miss clarity. However, no one seems that concerned about the guys and how they relate to each other. Everything is about fashion, fame and trying to survive as a has-been. The archival footage is chosen carefully and used to great effect. It’s everything in the present that feels like a chore. The DVD comes with a trailer as the sole special feature.
