“Sam Klemke’s Time Machine” is a fascinating documentary that looks at a man who documented his life for years. In an age of microblogging and Go Pros and kids on my lawn, this doesn’t sound that impressive. However, the sense of history that Klemke captures is impressive. Documenting his weight gain at the rise of home video equipment, we see a portrait of a man aging in a time when amateur video production was in its infancy. While it is charming on an emotional level, not a ton of things happen after that point.
I can forgive a lot based on the conveyance of humanity. But, this film isn’t a “Winnebago Man”. Nothing much comes out of cutting outside footage together with what we have of Sam Klemke. More than anything, it exists in a vacuum. A vacuum or a time capsule? Check it out and decide for yourself.
