THE MUTILATOR REVIEWED
“The Mutilator” is a goofy film that came out at the end of the first age of the Slasher movie. Not knowing whether to be serious or work as a comedy, the film became something else. It also suffered through a title change and ratings manipulation to make it into something marketable. The end result was decades of horror fans digging through archives to find the real cut of the film. Arrow USA has now found the best solution. We’re getting the real uncut version.
Buddy Cooper is quite an amazing writer/director, so why didn’t he get more films made? This film flies at breakneck speed, never loses focus and actually delivers on the horror. I guess a Fall Break movie about beach houses, matricide and scary old men killers don’t hit the right demo in the Krueger/Voorhees mid 80s. But, I think it could come back now. It might play far more serious, but the market should still be there.
I still don’t get why this film didn’t gain a major cult following. For those that don’t know, this is the kind of horror movie that makes nerds no how far down the rabbit hole you go. I’ve seen bootleg cassette tapes of the theme song sold at conventions under both movie titles. The original one sheet poster is so rare that it sparks auctions among horror nerds. Yet, none of these superfans has tried to push this on newer fans. I was a new fan at one point and the only reason I saw the film initially was because I kept irritating a guy that owned the poster.
