MOJAVE REVIEWED
“Mojave” is another directing effort from William Monahan. I like Monahan as a writer, so why can’t he connect as a director? Robert Towne was in similar footing, so Monahan shouldn’t feel that bad. It’s just a film about a drunk writer meeting an out-of-town weirdo isn’t that novel. Especially when the creep factor gets amped up and both parties have to wonder where they stand. Walton Goggins shows up to try and save the film, but nobody’s having that.
Everyone should have time for Goggins. When Goggins was onscreen, the film kinda worked. I could buy Hedlund’s character as being out of his comfort area. When Hedlund fed off Isaac, it felt like “Psycho III” by way of “The Tao of Steve”. Was this a DirecTV original? I can’t ever tell if DirecTV is producing these or they’re just the first buyers for A24.
