"Manimal" had more episodes air than Viva Laughlin.
“Manimal” finally gets the Complete Series DVD bow that it deserves. That’s when you realize it’s only eight episodes. Eight episodes that hipsters and Nerd TV fans blew up for generations that had a hard time understanding the premise. He’s a rich guy that turns into animals based on a semi riffed Beast Boy/Changeling origin. Also, he became a Professor of Criminology along the way.
That’s like if Batman got a degree while being rich and being a vigilante. Criminals love it when you can study them and provide a lecture while kicking them in the face. The early animal transformations for TV are stunningly provided by Stan Winston. What’s weird is that if you follow the timeline, he had to have gone directly into The Terminator when this show got cancelled. Road not taken and all that jazz.
The DVD comes with an interview, galleries, trailer and booklet as the special features. The A/V Quality is strong for a show of its age. I don’t know, but was the material remastered at some point? The audio track is a lot cleaner than the old footage and the transfer is far sharper than my old bootlegs. In the end, it’s worth a purchase.
