THE PLOT THUS FAR
Jim Gaffigan is back with a brand new hour long comedy special. Gaffigan’s infectious style brings you to tears as he talks about everyday scenarios that you can relate to. As one of the top comedians out today, he continues to raise the bar with new material and of course, some bacon.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Obsessed” is seventy minutes of Jim Gaffigan doing what he does best. Keeping the humor as white bread as it gets, while letting you know about the majesty of bacon. The guy stays so clean, that he almost comes across as comatose. I like my comedians working blue and I guess there is a market for keeping it family friendly. But, it’s a testament to Gaffigan’s talents that the material doesn’t suffer while playing so open to the audience. Too often, family friendly humor involves crap sitcoms and some redneck working racist puppets onstage.
The food obsessions take up about half of the whole set. The social commentary is there, but he spends so much time sounding like Louie Anderson’s sexual bucket list that one has to wonder what in the hell is going on. The lack of self absorption, as he tackles married life and working with his wife is refreshing. If anything, Gaffigan feels like a guy down the street that just wants to make you laugh. What is so wrong about carrying on and having fun without busting up on someone’s faults? There is room for all comedy, especially when it doesn’t demean one’s intelligence.
The Blu-Ray comes with no special features. The Dolby TrueHD audio track is supportive enough. The same can be said for the 1080p transfer. However, it’s not something that’s going to blow you out the back of your home theater. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
