IFC Films, in collaboration with Sapan Studio, has recently announced the acquisition of the North American rights to the captivating film “GHOSTLIGHT.” This announcement comes on the heels of the film’s world premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
Directed by the dynamic duo of Alex Thompson and Kelly O’Sullivan, who previously wowed audiences with their award-winning debut “SAINT FRANCES,” “GHOSTLIGHT” is their much-anticipated sophomore feature. The film uniquely stars a real-life family of actors – Keith Kupferer, Tara Mallen, and their daughter Katherine Mallen Kupferer (known for “ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET.”), along with the Golden Globe nominee Dolly De Leon from “TRIANGLE OF SADNESS.”
“GHOSTLIGHT” delves into the life of Dan, portrayed by Keith Kupferer in a star-making role. Dan, a construction worker dealing with melancholy, finds himself unexpectedly joining a local theater production of Romeo and Juliet. As the drama on stage begins to reflect his personal life, Dan and his family confront a past tragedy, leading to soulful performances that blur the lines between reality and fiction. The film has already garnered unanimous acclaim at Sundance, praised as a “charming, funny, and very human exploration” by Indiewire and celebrated for its “singularly affecting” performances by Vanity Fair.
Both Thompson and O’Sullivan expressed their excitement about partnering with IFC Films, known for its robust support of independent cinema, and Sapan Studio for the release of “GHOSTLIGHT.” Their sentiments were echoed by Josh Sapan of Sapan Studio, who lauded the film for its authentic depiction of family and love.
Scott Shooman, Head of AMC Networks’ Film Group, praised “GHOSTLIGHT” for its unique and tender approach to human connection. IFC Films plans to release this exquisite movie in theaters later this year, promising a remarkable cinematic experience.
“GHOSTLIGHT” was produced by an impressive team including Alex Thompson, Pierce Craven, Chelsea Krant, Ian Keiser, Eddie Linker, and Alex Wilson. The deal was smoothly negotiated by Scott Shooman for IFC Films, Josh Sapan for Sapan Studio, and Jason Ishikawa for Cinetic on behalf of the filmmakers.
