It's 1985 and Joe Strummer has lost his car.
“I Need a Dodge” is such a bizarre little documentary. It’s a mix of looking at what happened to that botched last Clash album and Joe Strummer slowly emerging as a solo artist. During this time, he spent an extensive time in Spain living in a land that he loved and losing his Dodge Dart. A decade later, Strummer would put out an open plea for his Dart to be returned. What would come next is refreshing.
Too many lost in the wilderness style music documentaries want to focus on the artistic process and the cult of personality. Nick Hall directs this interesting split, while we start to see a new side of Joe Strummer through old footage. The DVD package presents this documentary in an interesting way that blows past the feature. You get a bonus cassette of Strummer from the era and a ton of featurettes. If you’re a Clash fan, it’s worth a purchase to get a proper sense of history.
