“For most of my career, I have worked as an advisor to states, counties, and cities, providing solutions to major financial challenges. Although I had retired from that business, my interest never waned. When I became aware of Detroit’s situation in 2023, my career path in historical documentary filmmaking made me realize, ‘Wow, what a story this could tell.’
Far too many states and local governments have responded to financial distress by kicking the fiscal can down the road rather than making difficult decisions. We produced “Gradually, Then Suddenly” to provide clarity about what the end of that road looked like for Detroit and what it could look like for other communities in the future unless decision-making is forward-thinking and reality-tested. This film is a reminder to citizens and their leaders that deferring difficult choices has long-term consequences for the quality of life that we citizens can experience.”
