GIRLS: THE FINAL SEASON REVIEWED
“Girls” enters its final season with the same kind of fanfare that its prior seasons received. A handful of whiny online commentators stating that Lena Dunham never gets a fair chance. Meanwhile, Dunham decides to start a pregnancy storyline with slightly more thought than a puppy she dumps at the pound. The season is interesting, as Adam Driver actually gets to do something his character this year. I kept waiting for Driver to snap and whip out that weird lightsaber. It never happened, but Shoshanna wised up and ditched these losers for good.
There is one good thing to come from this season. Becky Ann Baker kills it as Hannah’s mother and she got an Emmy nomination for her effort. Watching as Hannah’s mom reaches a point where her daughter’s personal garbage pushes over her the edge is amazing. I’ve been a fan of Baker’s since the one-two punch of “A Simple Plan” and “Freaks and Geeks”. I just never expected her to become the audience’s focal point to scream at Dunham’s character.
If you didn’t enjoy the show, you’re not going to like it now. But, there are fans out there. Give it a shot for one last time.
