A Unique Collaboration from Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai
Running on Karma is the tenth collaboration between celebrated directors Johnnie To (known for Running Out of Time) and Wai Ka-fai (director of Peace Hotel). This film blends crime thriller elements with philosophical questions on spirituality, making it one of the most distinctive works in their filmography. The film also marks a unique turn for the genre with its incorporation of Buddhist concepts.
A Man With an Extraordinary Gift
In Running on Karma, Andy Lau stars as Big, a former Buddhist monk who gave up his religious vocation due to his extraordinary and burdensome gift—he can see people’s past lives and predict the impact of karma on their present and future. Big has since reinvented himself as a bodybuilder, but his past abilities continue to haunt him.
When he meets Lee Fung-yee (played by Cecilia Cheung from The Legend of Zu), a cop investigating a homicide, Big decides to use his abilities for good. As they join forces to solve the murder, their connection deepens, but Big’s gift also complicates matters—he can see Lee’s past lives as well.
A Crime Thriller with Spiritual Depth
Blending suspenseful genre thrills with deep philosophical questions, Running on Karma explores themes of spirituality, faith, and destiny. The film’s unique blend of crime and philosophy, along with its vivid portrayal of karmic consequences, places it alongside Mad Detective as one of the most compelling and original collaborations between Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai.
