“The Encore of Tony Duran” is about a wannabe singer that tries to commit crimes to get back to his dreams. Unfortunately, he botches that and it turns into another old bastard trying to reclaim his glory days. Tony ends up meeting a young woman that inspires him, all the while Elliott Gould shows up to remind you that his Altman days are behind him. It’s funny in that sad sort of way.
In regards to the film, it’s a trifle. While not bad, there’s nothing about it that strikes one as being memorable. We’ve seen the story of a struggling aging artist before. However, there’s nothing unique about a guy dabbling in minor crime to find a means to glory. Now, if William Katt’s character would’ve shot him in the face or something…that could’ve been interesting.
The DVD comes with a director’s video commentary, interviews and movie promos as the special features. The A/V Quality is strong for standard definition. The transfer is supportive for not having a ton to do. The Dolby 5.1 track creates a strong audio environment. In the end, I’d recommend a rental or stream.
