“The Don Rickles TV Specials” arrives with Volume 1. The dude worked his ass off on the big three networks throughout the 70s, so we’re probably going to get two more volumes. The first volume sports his 1970-1972 fare, as Rickles plays around with the format and brings out a ton of guest stars. The CBS and ABC specials are presented uncut for the first time. By the time that Harvey Korman shows up, you’ll know what you’re getting.
Don Rickles provides new introductions for the material and you get the TV Land Award presentation by Jimmy Kimmel. But, you’re watching to see people like Don Adams and Bob Newhart own the stage in a time when they were viable TV stars. I miss an era when an old white comedian could just do whatever they want onstage. But, their core audience is dead and hippie jokes are just old. Hell, I’d love to see Rickles do a new special where he goes into a Whole Goods and craps his pants out of shock.
