Here are seven stories about death and suicide.
“Der Todesking” is one of those films that the neckbeards at the video store would give you grief for never seeing it. I’d claim that I was 13 and only came in to rent Pulp Fiction. After being called a poseur, I’d leave in shame and not knowing anything else about German Cult Cinema. Cut to 21 years later and I still don’t know what I’ve seen. At a rudimentary level, it’s an episodic tale of suicide and death told through the German Arthouse need to go dark at every possible moment.
The film officially arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray for the first time. Was it ever on VHS? I’m assuming that some backwater distributor had to put out a VHS at one point. Well, what we get here is a bonus documentary, featurettes, a new intro, commentary and the original soundtrack as the special features. The new 1080p HD transfer is stunning, as it was sourced from the original 16mm print. Still, it’s sourced from 16mm.
I know that we have a generous portion of readers that are “Nekromantik” fans. However, I don’t feel the urge to watch these kinds of movies as an older viewer. I appreciate the artistic style and what Buttgereit accomplishes behind the camera. It’s just that I have to stop and be a little put off by how much gets thrown at the screen.
