DEN OF THIEVES REVIEWED
“Den of Thieves” plays like the dude version of “Mad Money”. Remember that one? Queen Latifah, Diane Keaton and a recently enslaved Katie Holmes rob the Federal Reserve of money that is going to be destroyed. Now, it’s the guys’ turn and Gerard Butler is upping the damn body count. The acting is really solid with 50 Cent, O’ Shea Jackson Jr and Pablo Schreiber offering amazing supporting turns. But, the movie is undermined by its incredibly weak story.
Too often you watch the film and pick up on better films. Gerard Butler does his best to maintain the lead, but you keep wandering back to what 50 Cent is doing. The younger actors hold their own, but they need better defined arcs. So, what’s the grand takeaway? Well, it will entertain people just looking for a Redbox rental.
For those that demand more out of their viewing, I’d recommend picking up the recently released The Seven Ups. It’s a retro affair that plays upon many of the same ideas. However, it does a far better job of being an urban crime film.
