THE SPIDER PROJECT: CHAPTER 6 – RICHARD, MARY, BEN AND MAY

MAYBENheader

If you’re a slave to the main Marvel continuity, you’ve learned to not examine just how old Aunt May and Uncle Ben must’ve been when they adopted Peter. Hell, most of those early flashbacks have May getting engaged to a Prohibition era mobster before meeting up with Uncle Ben Parker. Uncle Ben set her straight and the two got married. Peter’s father Richard was his brother Ben’s best man. Mary Parker showed up because, well…there’s a good explanation. If you buy Mark Millar’s argument that his Trouble limited series is supposed to be in-continuity, then Mary and May were buddies who went to summer camp together. Unfortunately, May got knocked up and had a baby. Mary and Richard raised the baby and then we pieced it all together.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t work. May and Ben are supposed to be 10-15 years older than Peter’s parents. It would be like a 16 year old girl asking her 31 year old friend to raise her baby. Legality and related issues would be raised. Even in a universe where Galactus shows up with the munchies. Let’s just say that Ben and May were a childless old couple that got stuck with an infant when his parents disappeared overseas and likely died. The kid spends the next 15-17 years living in relative peace with the couple until a science experiment goes awry. We all know Amazing Fantasy #15 and Peter loses a father figure.

MAYfiller

There hasn’t been a lot said about the politics of age in relation to the Spider-Man Universe. However, it’s very hard to ignore. The only parental figures that Pete is given at a young age are an older couple. All of the adults that Peter known are shown to be significantly older than him. Hell, his neighborhood in Queens is practically a retirement community. Everything that comes out of Aunt May’s mouth sounds like a Depression saying. What is the deal with that?

Was it meant as an effort to express the values of the emerging counter-culture. All of the old people are worthless and don’t share in your power. Only the kids and youth of NYC are down with the powers scene? Stan Lee was in his late 30s by this point and I’m not sure what he was trying to say. I keep getting this image of an older Randy Marsh screaming Excelsior while wearing rose tinted glasses and love beads. May and Ben Parker were a loving couple that made no problems for Peter. All they wanted to provide him with was love. But, if you care for a kid in the Marvel Universe, then you’re old as balls.

Richard and Mary Parker are another story all together. Stan Lee left them dead for a reason. When you’re telling a story about a super-powered orphan, it’s important to help define their uniqueness. Unfortunately, the 1960s lingered on and we got a Spidey Annual that decided they were undercover agents that were killed by The Red Skull. When we eventually cover the Avengers and Captain America, I’m going to make a big point about how you can’t ever tell what Red Skull you’re dealing with at a given time. Needless to say, the Parkers died as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; that was a later retcon. That followed the Parkers coming back as weird robots via the Chameleon and Parker freaking out in his identity as “The Spider”. Let’s try to forget the mid 1990s until later. I know that Marvel has done their best to forget it.

BEnghost

Out of the four, Uncle Ben will always be the key impact figure. That’s not to say that Aunt May wasn’t important. She is and she remains a big support player in the greater Spidey universe. However, Ben Parker is the reason that Spidey didn’t turn out like Octavius, Connors or the Osborns. Ben provided a framework that hangs like Catholic Guilt in the mind of Parker to this day. Hell, it’s so strong that it’s now controlling Doc Ock as the Superior Spider-Man. But, why does it matter?

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility is the mantra that keeps the last great science accident from destroying Mid-Town. Peter is weighed down with the fact that he was given these powers as some sort of divine providence. A lot of writers have read religious implications in the matter and it’s not wrong. Peter’s religion and Ben’s enforcement of its values have been lightly touched upon throughout the years. No one comes out and makes a big deal about it ala Shadowcat and The Thing’s Judaism. However, Peter knows that there is a great reason that he can stop crimes and save people from dying. It’s the misplaced rage he feels over indirectly causing Ben’s death.

That’s damn near Shakespearean, but 51 years into the run…it feels like we’re hitting a point of diminishing returns. While Peter will always love what Ben did for him, when does Webhead get to move on from that one fateful night? Think of all the lives he saved, plus the kid that collected Spider-Man. Peter has become a hero in ways that Ben could’ve never imagined. He has become the son he wanted to be for his father figure, for May and even for his deceased parents. When do the appeals of love for the parental units end?

BRUCE LEE: THE LEGACY COLLECTION

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Witness the films of a man that would become a legend… an icon…Bruce Lee!

This box set includes four of the films that would make Bruce Lee one of the most important martial artists ever to grace the screen. The set includes The Big Boss, Fist Of Fury, Way Of The Dragon and Game Of Death. Also included are two documentaries Bruce Lee: The Legend (and the original version Bruce Lee: The Man, The Legend) and I Am Bruce Lee plus a bonus disc with over two hours of bonus content exclusive to this set.

Get ready to witness the legend of the dragon…

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“The Big Boss” is about a young Chinese man named Cheng Chao-an who travels to Thailand looking for a job. Living with his distant cousins, he finds a job in the ice factory where his cousins work and soon he finds a family in them, developing a close friendship with Hsiu Chien and a big affection for Chow Mei. Although he is a skilled fighter Cheng sworn an Oath of non-violence to his mother, promising that he would not be a get in fights. However, things get complicated when two of his cousins disappear and is discovered that the ice factory has a dark secret. Cheng will have to break his Oath in order to unveil the mystery behind the disappearance of his new family.

There is one giant problem with “Fist of Fury” that was shown in the later adaptation “Fist of Legend”. The movie is pretty racist towards the Japanese. Set in 1908, the film is loosely based on the story of the Chin Woo Athletic Association, and the mysterious death of it’s founder, the legendary Martial Artist Huo Yuanjia. Located in Shanghai, China, the Chin Woo school faces big problems now that their leader has died, as the Japanese occupation of Shanghai makes life very difficult for the Chinese. This makes Chen Zhen furious, as he suspects the Japanese are behind the death of his master. As his investigation proves him right, Chen goes on a murder spree in order to avenge the death of Huo Yuanjia.

The one and only Bruce Lee made his directing debut with “Way of the Dragon”.  Not only the movie showed the world why he is the greatest martial artist to ever live, it showed that he is way ahead of his time.  This film showcased his astounding skills, agility, and charm much more so than the brilliant classic “Enter the Dragon”, and this film will show how truly fast and nimble Bruce Lee is with his fists and feet. The fight scenes are unbelievable, and it is already widely regarded that the final Colloseum battle between Tang Long and Colt is the best fighting sequence ever filmed for a movie.

Despite some awful dubbing and a poor script, ‘Game of Death’ is still watchable for it’s action. Fight choreographer Sammo Hung makes the non-Lee fight scenes entertaining even if the doubles don’t match Bruce Lee’s speed or technique. However, they do capture some traits of Lee’s fights including the slow motion finishing move. Also, the film’s budget allows for a number of locations ensuring that Billy’s quest for revenge keeps moving. In this regard, the Hollywood frills that are added give the film a degree of watchability, especially the classy score which appears throughout and heightens the final scenes.

The Blu-Ray comes with almost everything available about Bruce Lee. You get everything from commentaries, featurettes, alternate footage, interviews, trailers and image galleries across all of the films. If that wasn’t enough, you get a repackage of choice documentaries such as I Am Bruce Lee and Bruce Lee The Legend & its follow-up. The A/V Quality sports dynamic DTS-HD 5.1 master audio tracks that blow away anything I’ve ever heard.

Plus, the 1080p transfers have led me to retire my old FOX sets. Shout Factory has delivered one of the best sets of the year, if not this decade so far. I think they know this, as the guys in charge have become so comfortable at dropping the best in genre entertainment on our collective asses on a monthly basis. You’ve done it again, Shout Factory! In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.

THE PLOT THUS FAR

A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son’s custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Lucas, a lonely primary school teacher who relishes his job and is popular with both the children and the local community. Just as he meets Nadja and begins a relationship with her, his relationship with another woman, 5-year-old Klara, lands him in immeasurable trouble. What happens is a completely innocuous misunderstanding, but the community, the ‘adults’ who are supposed to be rational and fair, turn into a lynch mob.

Director Thomas Vinterberg absolves Klara from absolute blame and sets the stage for unreasonable and sinister conclusions. Watching the film from here on out is an unforgettable and riveting experience. It is natural to assume The Hunt simply alludes to the concept of a witch hunt and contents itself with being dramatized fiction about falsely accusing the innocent. But if that were so, the brilliant scene where Klara was interviewed would not have alarmed with its disturbing methodology.

The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes, deleted scenes and a trailer. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is superb for a quiet foreign drama. However, the 1080p transfer makes excellent use out of the Scandinavian soft lighting. It’s like that part of the country saw what Sven Nykvist was doing 30 years ago and said we’re good forever. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.

THE PLOT THUS FAR

A massage therapist is unable to do her job when stricken with a mysterious and sudden aversion to bodily contact. Meanwhile, her uptight brother’s floundering dental practice receives new life when clients seek out his healing touch.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

I really like what Lynn Shelton has managed to accomplish with her body of work. Not all of her movies and TV work are for everyone. But, she has a unique voice that espouses her point of view without being too aggressive. Plus, she works with the Mumblecore actors that I prefer. She’s not the Duplass Brothers, but frankly…who are?

The only thing that really irks me about the film is how easily drug use leaked into the film. Just because you lose your magic touch, you’re automatically going to turn to narcotics. I get the whole web of life and being connected to people, but that’s a bit much. Is there not any other way to show a person sliding down the spiral? Cinematic shorthand can be a bitch sometimes.

The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette and extended scenes. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp for this quirky dramedy. The DTS-HD 5.1 HD-MA track seems a little too robust at times. Still, the 1080p transfer keeps a thin shimmer throughout the presentation. Still, I’d recommend a purchase to the curious.

WOLVERINE, THE

THE PLOT THUS FAR

When Wolverine is summoned to Japan by an old acquaintance, he is embroiled in a conflict that forces him to confront his own demons.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Logan is tormented by two dreams, one of which is Jean Grey. The other is used as a flashback – 1945 Nagasaki. Ageless, immortal Logan who happened to be in a prisoner camp saved Japanese soldier Yashida’s life when the bomb was dropped. Back to the present: forever agonizing over the loss of Jean Grey, Logan apparently severed any link with the X-men community, becoming an angry lost soul seeking solace in alcohol but with the fire for justice still occasionally burning. This is all perfect setup for a solo flick and the eventual Days of Future Past stuff. But, let’s sweep convenience aside.

For those who would not consider themselves fans, but are rather moviegoers intent on enjoying a superhero epic, be warned. This film is a character study, it does not grapple with any conflicts outside of Wolverine’s internal struggles. The world is not being threatened, and not many lives outside of Logan’s are even being threatened, so the storyline does not crescendo in epic suspense like the Avengers or the Dark Knight. So for those not invested in Wolverine’s personal self discovery, some of the action can seem unmotivated and the pacing an obstacle to satisfaction. The film does its job in providing action sequences, but it intersperses several moments of symbolic soul searching, cryptic metaphors and relationship building that serve as pavement for Wolverine’s self discovery.

The Blu-Ray comes with a DVD copy, Digital HD copy, near feature length documentary, Days of Future Past early look, Second Screen app, the alternate ending that everyone online saw last month and you get the extended + theatrical cuts. The DTS-HD 7.1 HD-MA track has to be the last great audio track of the year. I feel bad because it seems like everyone’s having a baby now and through the next couple of months. I know that my blasting this movie in the AV Theater will result in the eventual hearing loss suffered by these infants. The 1080p transfer is pretty snazzy too. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
