ANGELS’ SHARE, THE

0

ANGELSSHAREdvdbox

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Narrowly avoiding jail, new dad Robbie vows to turn over a new leaf. A visit to a whisky distillery inspires him and his mates to seek a way out of their hopeless lives.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Angels’ Share” displays Ken Loach’s by now usual mix of naturalistic realism with everyday settings and improbable plotting with attendant unlikely coincidence along the way. The film starts with a couple of violent scenes to fully convey the tough environment from which the protagonists are seeking a way out but changes into a different film altogether when the four decamp to the Highlands to carry out their ingenious theft.

That dichotomy in retrospect seems a little forced at times and the coincidental nature of the plotting which affords them their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity stretches credulity as it settles into almost Ealing-esque territory but it’s carried off with some flair and conviction with a nice human touch at the end to send everyone home out of the cinema with a “feel-good” smile on their faces. The dialogue is fantastic, the conversations in this film seem so real and the colloquialisms provide so much humour for Scottish audiences. There have been few Scottish films lately that seem like a real Scottish film. The film also discusses a lot of other important issues i.e. alcoholism, drug abuse, poverty, violence and gang culture. It paints a picture of some people’s lives in Glasgow.

The DVD comes with deleted scenes and a trailer as the special features. The Dolby 5.1 track sets a stage, but it doesn’t have anything to show off. I’m not sure of that was the purpose of it, but it works. Plus, the transfer isn’t too bad for standard definition. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“2013 World Series” gets a proper Collector’s Edition spread across eight discs. People spent the whole year giving David Ortiz grief, but you can see that the guy was on the ball at every stop. Never did we see him slide or break, but it’s all on him to take them to the Fall Classic. Shane Victorino and Jon Lester got their moments, but it’s Ortiz’s show. Needless to say, it’s awesome to see the celebration at Fenway.

If you ever were a Boston fan, then this is baseball porn for you. You’ll be getting blasted and screaming Nomar, while your children look at you in fear. That’s when you teach them how to sing Tessie. Unfortunately, all they will hear is 1,2,3,4 and then screaming. But, that comes with the territory. Hot damn, I love New England professional sports.

The Blu-Ray comes with four different audio options for home and away radio, Spanish broadcast and standard TV. You get an insert with a ton of stats for those kinds of fans. Plus, you get a bonus disc with all of the season highlights including all of the AL East stuff. The A/V Quality boasts a strong 720p and DTS-HD 2.0 master audio track for the presentation. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.

INDIANA JONES AND THE RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Archeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the US government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” opens up in a South American jungle, as Indiana Jones leads an expedition to a lost temple. Despite his deceitful help, Indiana Jones manages to make it to the Golden Idol that he’s trying to recover. After triggering a booby trap, we get to watch as Indiana Jones and his guide Satipo have to escape the temple’s triggered traps. Indiana manages to escape, while he leaves Satipo’s corpse behind. After a brief encounter with his rival Belloq and a group of local Indians, Indiana escapes to his nearby charter plane to live another day. Back on his home turf, Dr. Jones teaches archaeology to the horniest college coeds 1936 had to offer. Marcus Brody intrudes upon Dr. Jones to let him know that the FBI wants to talk to him in the school’s auditorium.

The FBI lets Dr. Jones know that the Nazis are feverishly scouring the globe for supernatural artifacts to bring back to Hitler. Specifically, the Nazis want to use the Ark of the Covenant. According to Judeo-Christian myth, whoever possesses the Ark of the Covenant can use their God’s might to crush opposing armies. The FBI worried that some sort of mythic superweapon could tip the scales for the Nazi party, enlists Indiana Jones to help his country out. Indiana knows that he has to make one stop before he heads to the Middle East to find the Ark of Covenant. Indiana has to go to a bar in Nepal. Marion Ravenwood is one of the many notches on Indiana Jones’s bullwhip. This man has been chasing tail everywhere that his magical “red map line” takes him. After a brief scene of Marion Ravenwood’s severe alcoholism we’re treated to a reunion of Marion and Jones. After the duo fight for a bit, Indiana asks for a medallion that belonged to his mentor. Since Indy’s mentor was Marion’s father, she’s a little reluctant to give it up. Disappointed, Indiana leaves. But, that’s when my favorite Nazi arrives.

Toht is one of the cinema’s greatest creepy weirdos. He’s Peter Lorre by way of Mengele. Toht attempts to take the medallion away from Marion, but Marion isn’t going to give up so easily. But, that’s when the giant Sherpas show up. Lucky for Marion, she’s got Indiana Jones in her corner. What follows is one of the greatest barfights in cinematic history. All of that happens in the first half hour. This flick is packed. Spielberg has said in later interviews that he intended for the film to play as six serial episodes packed into one giant Republic Pictures serial epic. While I feel that the pacing might’ve been off a degree to achieve that, Spielberg and company have made something for the ages. Raiders of the Lost Ark is another one of the essentials…so, you all know what this is getting.

The Blu-Ray comes with a ton of trailers. The A/V Quality is very strong with a clean DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track and 1080p transfer. It’s the same transfer from last year’s mass release set. That being said, some people only prefer Raiders. I don’t know who those people are, but I’m glad that Paramount has taken the time to break up the set. There are so many studios out there who won’t even do that. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.

CHAPTER 10: THE SPIDER PROJECT – WHY MARY JANE DOESN’T WORK

MJDON'TWORKheader
I was really enraged over “One More Day”. Having been on the Ditko side of the argument for so long, I finally saw that Marvel was totally against letting Peter Parker age and develop new stories. I had planned on protesting the books. But, then they hooked me with the creative teams. Then, they brought back Norman Osborn. Plus, they were trying new stuff and it wasn’t terrible. What was going on here? Constant creative rotation to keep things fresh and lively? Villains being reintroduced as the classic threats we know them to be?!?

Then, we got to see Marcos Martin and Dan Slott on the book. Spider-Man had entered into a new Golden Age. But, what of Mary Jane? She was Peter’s wife and the mother of their disappeared baby. Would we ever get some sort of closure? Hell no. What was more surprising was how little it mattered. Does that say a lot for Mary Jane and her defined role in the Spider-Man universe. I venture to say that it did. But, why are now realizing the futile nature of Peter being married and its importance to Mary Jane?

MJ4
Mary Jane has always never made sense for Peter Parker or Spider-Man. It was wish fulfillment for a guy that went from puny nerd to crushing multiple samples of poon in a three year period. Gwen was his equal, Betty was the older woman and Mary Jane was the neighbor’s niece thrown upon him. Mary Jane doesn’t even show up until the classic final page of her debut issue. Sure, it’s one of the best entrances in comic history. However, Mary Jane already feels like a put on intruder into a world that she doesn’t understand.

She spends the next year dancing through the comic and pushing off the boys. Peter grows closer to Gwen until she eventually dies, then he’s forced back onto Mary Jane. Mary Jane rejects him, then he starts associating with related ESU students, Marvel Team-Up guest stars and the Black Cat. When all of those go into the crapper, Mary Jane shows up and he proposes. Parker gets rejected, then MJ accepts due to a pending marriage in the Spider-Man comic strip. That’s right, kids. Peter and Mary Jane only got married because Marvel wanted to tie it into an unrelated storyline in the national newspaper comic strip.

The key point of Peter and MJ’s relationship was based on editorial interference. Tom DeFalco had actually spent a storyline early explaining how MJ figured out Peter’s identity, but kept it to herself. Then, made a very reasonable argument for why she could like Peter as a friend. Cut to two years later, forced attacks and a second rejected marriage; then MJ is cool about dealing with Peter. Why was it such a big deal? Why did we loft MJ up to this status that doesn’t seem deserved?

MJ3

The marriage issue is so confusing. It happened in the first Amazing Spider-Man issue I ever read and most of the imagery has come to dominate my opinion of Spidey through the years. Whether it’s the marriage nightmare with the villains attacking the guests or the robbery with Electro; these images are what I see in my head when I see Spidey. Everything after that point was an excuse to force MJ into action, whether it was Venom attacking for the first time or the creepy landlord stalking her. For next decade, everything became about MJ’s pregnancy, habits and constant fears for Peter.

The comic was quickly becoming a relationship drama, when we weren’t dealing with fake robot parents, clones, the Superhuman Registration Act or Aunt May getting shot. Enough was enough, as the time came to re-evaluate what MJ brought to the team. The answer was that she is a party girl who worked better as an X Factor. The mystery created by Romita and Lee was long dead and that revealed something didn’t work. MJ isn’t meant to be understood by Peter, she’s out of his league.

MJDOESNTWORK

Ultimately, what matters is that Mary Jane stays a viable character in the Spider-Man universe. While she is a personality mis-match, she’s a life-long friend that knows a lot about the man behind the mask. That kind of grounding is absent outside of a direct family tie to Peter. When MJ makes Mephisto end their marriage during “One More Day”, she whispers something that we don’t find out until “One Moment in Time”. Unfortunately, this twist is negated by the fact that Peter forces MJ to remember their life together as it was, but the duo chooses to split and move on.

It’s a tricky setup, but it’s one that has led Spider-Man back to the promise of the early 1980s. There are multiple people in his life demanding certain things, but they all want to push him forward. Even Mary Jane has setup her own business and works as an outside factor in Peter’s life. The book is “The Amazing Spider-Man” for reason and not “Mary Jane Knows Best” for a reason. Supporting characters work when they have a defined role for our central figure. After a quarter century in the main book, MJ lost that focus and the story suffered.

While we have turned back the clock on that matter, something harsh remains. Why can’t a woman be on par with Spider-Man? Much has been made out of his MC2 counterpart Spider-Girl. Sure, it’s his daughter as a legacy character keeping the identity alive, but she manages to find time for her retired father in her book. But, her book keeps getting cancelled and the readership of that title is a tenth of what Amazing Spider-Man pulls down. Point rested.

FUTURAMA: VOLUME 8

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Attention, easily brainwashed citizens of Earth! You are now under the control of FUTURAMA Volume 8: the highly animated sci-fi comedy from The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Packed with mind-altering, brain-exploding extras not shown on TV, this outrageous collection includes 13 mesmerizing episodes featuring maniac street racers, robot grave robbers, and nerve-wracking nose transplants. You’ll watch, you’ll laugh, you’ll obey. The Hypnotoad commands it!

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Futurama” has come to an end…again. While I didn’t love this second batch as much as the first run, it did have its moments. I can’t name many off the top of my head, but Sergio Aragones was in the Comic-Con episode. You know! The one where Starbuck cosplays as an alien and gets Lrr to fall in love with her. Those were some good times with the Planet Express crew. I just wish I could say the other seasons weren’t so incredibly hit and miss. They couldn’t even stick the trilogy episodes anymore.

There is still something about the series finale that bugs me. Much was made about Fry and Leela getting married and the subsequent stories to be told. Then, Comedy Central cancelled the series like a bunch of punks. Honestly, while watching the constantly recycling and time loops of the series finale…I don’t believe this was a bad thing. The show had hit a point where the expiration date had passed and they were just spinning their wheels. Sometimes, early series bows are a blessing.

The Blu-Ray comes with commentaries, deleted scenes and featurettes. The A/V Quality is pretty strong with a crisp 1080p transfer across the 13 episodes. Plus, the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track works for what it is. It’s comparable to past Blu-Ray releases. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.

THE PLOT THUS FAR

In this exceptional 3-disc collection, HISTORYr explores the stories behind the classic myths of ancient Greece. Meet Zeus,  the king of the gods, like you’ve never seen him before in an epic battle with the Titans. Join Hercules’ quest for redemption  as he embarks on his 12 Labors, and dive deep into Hades’ underworld to explore the ancient Greek belief in life after death.  Learn the true story behind the snake-haired gorgon, Medusa, and follow Odysseus’ adventures on his famous journey home  from battle to reclaim his wife and kingdom in a tale filled with beasts, vengeful gods and enchanting seductresses. For the  people of this ancient land, these myths explained and gave meaning to the world. This special set includes visits to  archeological sites, stunning location footage, interviews with leading scholars, and period art and writings to investigate the  possible real-world origins of these iconic and foundational myths.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Greeks, Gods, Heroes and Monsters” is a compilation of 8 previous History specials about Greek mythology. If you’re a young kid, then this will blow your socks off. It uses a few computer generated reproductions while staying away from Bullfinch. But, it’s not a serious academic affair. If anything, it’s on par with watching Jason and the Argonauts in class. You get a taste of the world, but somebody ends up fighting a walking skeleton.

The DVD comes with no special features. The Dolby track sets a stage, but it doesn’t have anything to show off. I’m not sure of that was the purpose of it, but it works. Plus, the transfer isn’t too bad for standard definition. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
