I can see why this film was banned for ages.
“Angst” is a loose take on Austrian psycho Werner Kniesek. While other Germaan cult cinema of the 1980s tends to focus on mood. This film lives for complete terror scored by the dude from Tangerine Dream. The film pushes you into first person, as you follow this psycho up and down the countryside. All he wants is to murder someone and nobody seems to be setting themselves up to die.
That is until he finds one special rural family. What’s so amazing about this film is that it has lived in the Western World on hushed talk of its nature. I’ve read about it and I’ve talked to people who had claimed to saw a bootleg here and there. But, nothing prepares you for the intimacy of a man that just wants to murder. That’s why I get annoyed now when I see people describe the film as torture porn. Torture is prolonged and delays the inevitable. Angst is about making someone know death is coming and to keep it elaborate.
The Blu-Ray comes with the option to watch the film with or without the prologue. You also get an introduction by Gaspar Noe, interviews, featurettes, commentary and a booklet as the other special features. The A/V Quality is far better than I ever expected for a film like this. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio surround track is as loud as any contemporary film, but is it overmixed? I couldn’t tell. I’d recommend a purchase to the extreme cult cinema fans out there.
