SYMPTOMS

SYMPTOMS REVIEWED

“Symptoms” plays like “Queen of Earth”, but as a horror film. That was my first thought upon finishing the film. Two female friends pal around in the country until a dead woman is found in a nearby lake. One friends starts to doubt how the dead body ended up in there and a friendship is called into question. Coming at the tale end of the early 70s psychological pastoral horror trend, “Symptoms” had quite the response upon its release in the United Kingdom.

Sadly after a terrific bow at Cannes, the film went ignored for decades. The talented folk at Mondo Macabre have released the film on Blu-Ray with more supplemental material than I thought could ever exist. This is the first time I’ve actually seen the film, so I think I’ll revisit it in a few weeks as a double feature with “The Other”. The two are similar tales, but I want to judge the difference in an American vs. British approach to the same kind of story.
